Over the weekend, the nation remembered the victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, which occurred 12 years ago. The tragedy was echoed by a recent school shooting in Madison, Wisconsin. This incident disrupted students and teachers during their last week before Christmas break.
Vice President Kamala Harris expressed her condolences for those affected by the Madison shooting. "Doug and I are mourning the student and teacher who were killed," she stated. She also extended prayers to those injured and gratitude to first responders who acted swiftly.
Harris emphasized the need to address gun violence, which she identified as a leading cause of death among children in America. She acknowledged progress made over four years with significant gun safety legislation and the establishment of a White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention but stressed more needs to be done.
The Vice President called on Congress and state legislatures to implement universal background checks, pass red flag laws, enforce safe storage regulations, and ban assault weapons. "These commonsense solutions will save lives," Harris asserted.
