The Governments of Japan and the United States have introduced new Guidelines for Extended Deterrence, responding to a challenging strategic and nuclear threat environment. The aim is to reinforce extended deterrence, ensuring regional stability and deterring potential conflicts.

Developed through discussions in the Extended Deterrence Dialogue (EDD), these guidelines enhance existing consultation and communication procedures within the Alliance. They also focus on strategic messaging to maximize deterrence and improve U.S. extended deterrence measures, supported by Japan's defense capabilities.

Both nations remain committed to exploring ways to ensure that extended deterrence remains robust and credible.

"Based upon accumulated discussion primarily through the Extended Deterrence Dialogue (EDD), the Governments of Japan and the United States have formulated the Guidelines for Extended Deterrence," reads part of their joint statement. "The Alliance will continue to explore how best to ensure extended deterrence is strong and credible."
