A Cedar Rapids resident, Devonte Oye Robertson, has been sentenced to two years in federal prison following a guilty plea to possession of firearms by a felon. Robertson, aged 29, admitted to having Sig Sauer and Smith & Wesson pistols on January 19, 2024, despite prior felony convictions.
The sentence was handed down by United States District Court Chief Judge C.J. Williams on December 20, 2024. In addition to the prison term, Robertson will serve three years of supervised release. Federal sentences do not include parole.
This case falls under Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence through collaboration between law enforcement agencies and communities. The Department of Justice strengthened PSN with a strategy announced on May 26, 2021, focusing on community trust, prevention efforts by local organizations, strategic enforcement priorities, and measurable outcomes.
Robertson is currently in the custody of the United States Marshal pending transfer to a federal prison. The case was prosecuted by Special Assistant United States Attorney Michael S.A. Hudson and investigated by multiple agencies including the Cedar Rapids Police Department, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the Federal Bureau of Investigations.
