National Farmers Union (NFU) has expressed its condolences to the family of former President Jimmy Carter following his passing. Carter, who was the 39th President of the United States, is remembered for his support of family farms and for being the last farmer to serve as President.
During his presidency, Carter appointed Bob Bergland, a member and organizer of the Farmers Union, as Secretary of Agriculture. This decision reflected his commitment to agricultural communities and their issues.
NFU President Rob Larew commented on Carter's legacy: “President Carter’s agricultural roots prepared him to serve this country with grace and compassion through a difficult time and continue his humanitarian efforts for the remainder of his life.” Larew also highlighted how Carter's journey from a "humble peanut farmer from Georgia" to holding the highest office in America demonstrated "the strength and value of the voice of family farmers and ranchers everywhere."
The organization extended its sympathies to Carter's family while joining others across the nation in remembering his contributions.
