The American Medical Association (AMA) has expressed its support for the Surgeon General's recent advisory highlighting the connection between alcohol consumption and cancer risk. The AMA emphasized that alcohol consumption, regardless of quantity, is a modifiable risk factor for cancer.
"For years, the AMA has said that alcohol consumption at any level, not just heavy alcohol use or addictive alcohol use, is a modifiable risk factor for cancer," stated the association. Despite substantial evidence over the decades linking alcohol to cancer, many people remain unaware of this risk.
The AMA believes that the advisory will increase public awareness and improve health outcomes. They also support efforts to update the health warning labels on alcoholic beverages to reflect these findings.
"Today’s advisory, coupled with a push to update the Surgeon General’s health warning label on alcoholic beverages, will bolster awareness, improve health, and save lives," concluded the statement from the AMA.
