Amazon Web Services (AWS), a subsidiary of Amazon.com, Inc., has announced a collaboration with Honda Motor Company. The partnership aims to transition Honda's vehicles from hardware-based models to software-defined vehicles (SDVs). This initiative will leverage AWS's Digital Proving Ground (DPG) platform, combining AWS compute, generative artificial intelligence (AI), and Internet of Things (IoT) capabilities with Honda’s data lake.
The collaboration seeks to enhance driving experiences by providing over-the-air software updates for safety, security, efficiency, entertainment, and convenience. SDVs also allow for personalization based on drivers' habits and preferences without needing physical modifications.
Honda is utilizing AWS infrastructure to develop and test new SDV models quickly. The cloud-based DPG platform enables data collection for estimating electric vehicle (EV) driving range and visualizing energy consumption and performance data. It also supports vehicle software updates, reducing reliance on physical hardware and speeding up development timelines.
AWS IoT services are being used by Honda to improve vehicle quality, safety, and autonomy through continuous software development. These services help collect and manage vehicle data, track EV battery information, and schedule maintenance. Additionally, Amazon Kinesis Video Streams is being employed to build video processing applications that analyze car camera footage using machine learning.
Generative AI services from AWS are aiding Honda in developing personalized user experiences for EV charging. A new solution under development will guide drivers to optimal charging stations based on various factors such as location and fees. This feature will be part of the 0 Series line of EVs.
"The automotive industry is undergoing a seismic shift to digitization," said Ozgur Tohumcu, director of Automotive and Manufacturing at AWS. "Vehicles now function as intelligent, connected platforms on wheels." He expressed anticipation for the collaboration with Honda in realizing their vision for smart vehicles.
To support its transition to cloud-based mobility solutions, Honda established an Expert Builder Initiative with AWS in 2024. This program aims to enhance the skills of hybrid talent engineers in both vehicle software and cloud technologies through training in the latest cloud advancements.
