C. Shanelle Booker has assumed the role of Acting U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Georgia, marking a historic first as both the first Black person and Black woman to lead the office. Her appointment took effect on January 12, 2025, under the Vacancies Reform Act.
Booker has been serving as a federal prosecutor in the Middle District of Georgia since 2015, occupying key leadership positions such as Criminal Division Chief and First Assistant U.S. Attorney. "It is an honor for me to serve the citizens of the Middle District of Georgia in this leadership role, and to ensure the good work of the office continues seamlessly," said Booker. She emphasized that "upholding justice and ensuring the safety of all is our office’s utmost objective."
Throughout her career, Booker has prosecuted significant cases involving violent crime, child exploitation, sex trafficking, public corruption, and fraud. Her extensive roles have included Elder Justice Coordinator and Criminal Civil Rights and Hate Crimes Coordinator.
In addition to her professional duties, Booker actively participates in community service initiatives focusing on youth mentorship through programs like Girl Squad Mentoring Program and United Way's Read United Program. She also contributes to legal education by teaching criminal justice at Mercer University’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences since 2020.
Booker's educational background includes a B.A. from Hampton University and a J.D. from Northwestern University School of Law. Her legal career began with a clerkship under U.S. District Judge Brian Miller followed by serving as a state public defender in Brunswick, Georgia.
As Acting U.S. Attorney, Booker leads federal law enforcement efforts across 70 counties in Georgia with responsibilities including prosecuting federal crimes related to terrorism, public corruption, child exploitation among others.
