The U.S. Department of Commerce has finalized a long-term partnership with Natcast to operate the National Semiconductor Technology Center (NSTC). The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has awarded Natcast up to $6.3 billion under this agreement, aimed at bolstering U.S. leadership in semiconductor technology.
This partnership is part of the CHIPS for America initiative, which supports research and development to enhance economic growth and national security. The award builds on a previously announced intent to invest over $5 billion in the NSTC.
"A robust research and development ecosystem is essential to ensuring the United States is a global leader in semiconductor innovation," stated U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo. She emphasized that the NSTC will serve as "the foundation for the next wave of technological breakthroughs."
Natcast CEO Deirdre Hanford remarked, "The NSTC represents a once-in-a-generation opportunity to build the shared infrastructure, resources, workforce, and collaboration necessary to secure America’s global leadership position in semiconductor technology." She noted significant engagement from across the semiconductor ecosystem.
The 10-year award will fund various programs aligned with the NSTC Strategic Plan released in October 2024. This includes investments in research and development, workforce development, an investment fund, silicon aggregation services, technical centers, and operation of CHIPS for America R&D flagship facilities.
Previously, Natcast received $1.1 billion from the CHIPS National Advanced Packaging Manufacturing Program (NAPMP) for advanced packaging activities at its Prototyping and NAPMP Piloting Facility.
Since launching its membership program in fall 2024, over 100 members have committed to joining the NSTC.
CHIPS for America aims to stimulate private sector investment and create jobs while enhancing U.S.-based manufacturing capabilities. It operates under NIST within the Department of Commerce.
