Today, the United States Supreme Court upheld a significant law known as the Protecting Americans From Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act. This legislation mandates that TikTok divest from its Chinese Communist Party ownership to continue operating in the United States.
Chairman John Moolenaar, a Republican from Michigan and leader of the House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party, commented on this decision. His remarks emphasized the importance of this ruling for TikTok's future in America.
Moolenaar stated, "The Supreme Court has upheld a law that requires applications owned by our foreign adversaries to be sold in order to operate in the US – and ruled it to be constitutional." He clarified that this decision does not ban TikTok but rather offers "a pathway to a safer, better TikTok."
He highlighted former President Trump's awareness of the threats posed by foreign control over such applications and his ability to negotiate effectively. Moolenaar mentioned that several American buyers are interested in acquiring TikTok for substantial sums, allowing users to continue enjoying the app.
However, he pointed out that ByteDance, controlled by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), has been reluctant to engage in negotiations. "It is ignoring the law because it does not care about you," Moolenaar said. He accused the CCP of preferring to shut down TikTok rather than sell it.
Moolenaar urged ByteDance to cooperate and facilitate what he called "the deal of the century" for a secure future for both America and TikTok users. He concluded with a call to action: "Now all ByteDance has to do is sell. Let’s get to work."
