Under the Biden-Harris Administration and U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo’s leadership, the Department of Commerce took a new approach to economic policy aimed at turning the agency into an engine of innovation and growth. The department made transformational investments to enhance U.S. competitiveness by uniting its bureaus and economic tools to address 21st-century challenges.
“Over the last four years, my mission at the Department of Commerce has been to unite our tools in an effective way to enhance U.S. competitiveness and protect U.S. national security,” said Raimondo. She highlighted efforts such as reshoring the domestic semiconductor supply chain and leading responses to AI challenges.
Deputy Secretary Don Graves remarked on his travels across America: “I traveled to dozens of communities across America and witnessed the impact the Department of Commerce is making.” He expressed gratitude towards department members for their contributions over four years.
The CHIPS Program Office has allocated $39 billion for rebuilding domestic semiconductor manufacturing and securing supply chains. In addition, commerce leads government efforts on AI safety through testing and evaluation frameworks.
Commerce also focused on regional competitiveness with unprecedented investments aimed at transforming local economies by mobilizing various resources for long-term growth in previously neglected areas.
Workforce development saw initiatives like the $525 million Good Jobs Challenge aiming to place 53,000 workers in quality jobs with benefits through sectoral partnerships.
Internet connectivity is another priority under Internet for All programs targeting affordable high-speed access by 2030 for households nationwide.
To curb military advancements from China (PRC), strategic controls were implemented while export controls impeded Russia’s military capabilities during its conflict with Ukraine.
Supply chain diversification efforts followed COVID-19 disruptions through partnerships enhancing critical supply chain resilience vital for national security.
Climate resilience received a boost via investments from acts like IRA & BIL enabling NOAA projects supporting climate adaptation strategies nationwide through funding innovations aiding community-based decision-making processes around climate change impacts.
