New Orleans man receives over nine years for drug and weapon offenses

Duane A. Evans, U.S. Attorney | U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Louisiana

Geoourvon Sears, a 27-year-old resident of New Orleans, has been sentenced to 111 months in prison for federal drug and weapons violations. Chief U.S. District Judge Nannette Jolivette Brown handed down the sentence on January 16, 2025. Following his prison term, Sears will undergo five years of supervised release and pay a $200 mandatory special assessment fee.

Sears had previously pleaded guilty to charges including possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine, tapentadol, and marijuana. These actions violated Title 21 of the United States Code, Sections 841(a)(1), 841(b)(1)(C), and 841(b)(1)(D). Additionally, he was charged with possessing a firearm in furtherance of drug trafficking crimes under Title 18, United States Code, Section 924(c)(1)(A)(i).

Court documents reveal that on June 6, 2024, officers from the New Orleans Police Department executed a search warrant at Sears's residence. During the search, they discovered a backpack containing methamphetamine, tapentadol, and marijuana intended for sale by Sears. Officers also found two loaded firearms: a Romarm/Cugir Model Mini Draco semi-automatic pistol and a Norinco Model SKS rifle.

This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence through collaboration between law enforcement agencies and communities. The program emphasizes fostering trust within communities, supporting organizations that prevent violence, setting strategic enforcement priorities, and measuring outcomes.

The investigation was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation alongside the New Orleans Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney David Berman from the Violent Crime Unit is prosecuting the case.
