Eulises Yobani Rafael-Garcia, a 28-year-old Mexican citizen residing in Gary, Indiana, has been sentenced for illegal re-entry into the United States. The sentencing was carried out by United States District Court Judge Philip P. Simon after Rafael-Garcia pleaded guilty to the felony charge.
Rafael-Garcia has been in custody since his arrest on April 5, 2024. He received a sentence of time served and will be transferred to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for removal proceedings.
Court documents reveal that Rafael-Garcia had been removed from the U.S. three times before and had a prior conviction for misdemeanor illegal entry. During the investigation, he admitted to having previous connections with drug-trafficking organizations.
The case was investigated by Homeland Security Investigations with support from National Park Service Law Enforcement Rangers. Assistance was provided by ICE's Enforcement and Removal Operations and the United States Marshals Service's Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force. Assistant U.S. Attorney Francis Sohn prosecuted the case.
