Presidential memo reinstates Mexico City Policy on global health assistance

ORGANIZATIONS IN THIS STORY

The President has revoked the Presidential Memorandum of January 28, 2021, which was aimed at protecting women's health domestically and internationally. In its place, the President has reinstated the memorandum dated January 23, 2017, known as The Mexico City Policy.

This policy affects several key government figures and departments. The Secretary of State is directed to work in coordination with the Secretary of Health and Human Services to implement a plan extending the requirements of this reinstated memorandum to global health assistance provided by all relevant U.S. departments or agencies.

Furthermore, there are directives for the Secretary of State to ensure that U.S. taxpayer dollars are not used to fund organizations or programs that support or participate in coercive abortion or involuntary sterilization.

The memorandum explicitly states it does not create any enforceable rights or benefits against the United States government or its entities. The Secretary of State is also tasked with publishing this memorandum in the Federal Register.
