Tulsa woman sentenced to 20 years for murder of sister-in-law

Clinton J. Johnson U.S. Attorney | U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Oklahoma

A Tulsa woman, Alexis Danielle Flanner, was sentenced to 20 years in prison for Second Degree Murder in Indian Country and Discharging a Firearm During and in Relation to a Crime of Violence. The sentencing was announced by U.S. Attorney Clint Johnson.

U.S. District Judge John F. Heil III imposed the sentence of 240 months followed by five years of supervised release on Flanner, who is 26 years old.

The incident occurred in July 2022 when Tulsa Police officers responded to reports of shots fired. Upon their arrival, they discovered Estrella Mendoza dead from a gunshot wound. Security footage showed Flanner and Mendoza entering a store together before the shooting occurred outside. Mendoza was seen crawling away from Flanner before collapsing, while Flanner fled the scene.

A witness attempted to assist Mendoza, who identified Flanner as her shooter before losing consciousness. Officers later found Flanner's vehicle with fresh blood splatter and the firearm used in the crime at her residence.

Flanner reportedly admitted that she was angry with her sister-in-law because Mendoza would not return her marijuana grinder.

As a citizen of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation, Flanner will remain in custody pending transfer to the U.S. Bureau of Prisons.

The case was investigated by the FBI and Tulsa Police Department, with Assistant U.S. Attorneys Aaron Jolly and Valeria Luster handling prosecution duties.
