Columbus man sentenced for gun and drug offenses near local school

Adrian McKinney, a 29-year-old resident of Columbus, has been sentenced to 84 months in federal prison. The sentence was handed down by U.S. District Court for illegal possession of a firearm and narcotics near Wedgewood Middle School.

In March 2024, law enforcement executed a search warrant at McKinney's apartment located in the Wedgewood Village Apartment Complex. This complex is within close proximity to multiple schools and consists of 700 units. The search revealed a loaded multi-caliber firearm, fentanyl, and cocaine. As a convicted felon, McKinney is prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition.

McKinney had previously been convicted of various state narcotics crimes and was under court supervision when these offenses occurred. He pleaded guilty in August 2024 to charges including possession with intent to distribute cocaine near a school, illegal possession of a firearm as a convicted felon, and possessing a firearm in furtherance of drug trafficking.

The investigation was conducted by the Wedgewood Enforcement Team, formed by the Columbus Division of Police in October 2023 to tackle high crime rates at the apartment complex.

Kenneth L. Parker, United States Attorney for the Southern District of Ohio; Daryl S. McCormick, Special Agent in Charge at the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives (ATF); and Columbus Police Chief Elaine Bryant announced the sentencing decision made by U.S. District Court Judge Michael H. Watson. Assistant United States Attorney Jennifer M. Rausch represents the United States in this case.
