Sean P. Costello U.S. Attorney | U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Alabama
Umar Abdul Waheed, also known as Terry Evans, has been sentenced to 37 months in federal prison for illegal firearm possession. The sentencing was carried out by United States Chief District Judge Jeffrey U. Beaverstock.
Court documents reveal that in June 2024, Waheed reported to the Mobile County Community Corrections office in Alabama while having outstanding state warrants. These were related to threats he allegedly made with a firearm at a local construction site days earlier. Upon taking him into custody, officers found a firearm in the vehicle Waheed used to arrive at Community Corrections. As a convicted felon, Waheed is legally prohibited from possessing firearms.
Judge Beaverstock sentenced Waheed to 37 months of incarceration followed by three years of supervised release after his prison term ends.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation led the investigation, and Assistant United States Attorney Beth Stepan prosecuted the case on behalf of the United States.
This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), which aims to reduce violent crime and gun violence through collaboration between law enforcement and communities. Launched on May 26, 2021, this strategy focuses on building community trust, supporting violence prevention organizations, prioritizing strategic enforcement actions, and measuring outcomes.
