Box Elder man sentenced for knife assault on Rocky Boy’s Indian Reservation

A Box Elder man, Colten Tyrone Small, also known as Colton Swan, has been sentenced to five years and seven months in prison for assaulting a woman on the Rocky Boy’s Indian Reservation. The incident involved cutting the victim's face with a knife during an argument. Following his prison term, Small will be subject to three years of supervised release.

Small, aged 22, pleaded guilty in September 2024 to charges of assault with a dangerous weapon and assault resulting in serious bodily injury. Chief U.S. District Judge Brian M. Morris presided over the case.

According to court documents, the assault occurred in the early hours of May 3, 2023. The victim, identified as Jane Doe, was punched by Small while he held a butcher knife at a residence in Box Elder on the reservation. A witness reported that Small sliced Doe’s face during their altercation. The situation escalated until another individual intervened and physically confronted Small. At the time of the incident, there was use of fentanyl and alcohol.

Doe received medical treatment for her injuries at Northern Montana Hospital in Havre.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office handled the prosecution of this case with investigative support from both the FBI and Rocky Boy’s Law Enforcement.
