The U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Utah reported collections totaling over $12.9 million in civil and criminal actions during Fiscal Year 2024. U.S. Attorney Trina A. Higgins disclosed that $8,385,272.13 was collected from criminal actions, while $4,568,745.08 came from civil actions.
In collaboration with other U.S. Attorney’s Offices and Department of Justice components, an additional $2,978,609.99 was gathered in joint cases—$12,350 from criminal actions and $2,966,259.99 from civil actions.
Highlighting specific cases: a Washington County man paid off the remaining balance of his court-ordered restitution amounting to $2,139,926.35 after being sentenced in 2022 for failing to file financial reports upon returning currency exceeding $10,000 into the United States from China.
Another case involved a Utah businessman who was sentenced in July 2024 to imprisonment and ordered to pay restitution of $10,250,834.53 after defrauding investors through his smartphone company SAYGUS.
The U.S. Attorneys’ Offices enforce and collect debts owed to the United States as well as restitution owed to federal crime victims who have suffered physical injury or financial loss due to certain federal crimes.
Furthermore, the District of Utah's office worked with partner agencies to collect $4,625,653 through asset forfeiture actions in FY 2024. These assets are deposited into the Department of Justice Assets Forfeiture Fund for use in restoring funds to crime victims and supporting law enforcement activities.
