Edmonton man sentenced to over five years for illegal firearm possession

An Edmonton, Kentucky man has been sentenced to five years and eleven months in federal prison for illegally possessing a firearm. The announcement was made by U.S. Attorney Michael A. Bennett of the Western District of Kentucky, Special Agent in Charge R. Shawn Morrow of the ATF Louisville Field Division, and Commissioner Phillip Burnett, Jr. of the Kentucky State Police.

Court documents reveal that Aaron Dale McKinney, aged 48, will also face three years of supervised release following his prison term. McKinney was found with a Springfield Armory (HS Produkt), model XD-45, 45 caliber semiautomatic pistol and ammunition on February 23, 2023. As a convicted felon, he was prohibited from possessing firearms.

McKinney's previous convictions include possession of a controlled substance in the first degree on May 25, 2021, and manufacturing methamphetamine on September 26, 2017—both offenses were adjudicated in Metcalfe Circuit Court.

The investigation into this case was conducted by the ATF Bowling Green Field Office alongside the Kentucky State Police. Assistant U.S. Attorney R. Nicholas Rabold prosecuted the case.

This sentencing is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence through collaboration between law enforcement agencies and communities. The Department launched a violent crime reduction strategy on May 26, 2021, focusing on fostering community trust, supporting violence prevention organizations, setting strategic enforcement priorities, and measuring outcomes.

There is no parole available in the federal system.
