The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has announced the use of land at Sepulveda Basin, owned by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Los Angeles District, as a staging area for California National Guard personnel and vehicles. This arrangement will last for 60 days and is part of the recovery mission following the Palisades and Eaton fires.
The site, located at Woodley Avenue and Victory Boulevard, will be occupied by the National Guard starting February 2, 2025. The City of Los Angeles’ Department of Recreation and Parks has agreed to an emergency permit for this purpose after USACE's issuance of a letter of no objection.
No hazardous household materials will be stored at this location. The EPA is currently engaged in its largest wildfire hazardous waste cleanup effort to date, assisting local governments and residents affected by fires in Los Angeles County. Reconnaissance has been completed at nearly 5,000 properties impacted by these fires.
As part of Phase 1 of their mission, EPA emphasizes that residents will not be blocked from accessing their properties but urges caution when returning home.
"The people of Los Angeles County should be assured that EPA will continue to carry out its mission to assist our fellow Americans in need," stated an EPA representative.
