Honduran man sentenced for illegal reentry into U.S., faces prison term

Duane A. Evans, U.S. Attorney | U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Louisiana

United States Attorney Duane A. Evans has announced the sentencing of Victor Manuel Osorto-Lopez, a 40-year-old Honduran national, for illegal reentry into the United States. Osorto-Lopez had previously pleaded guilty to the charge, which violates Title 8, United States Code, Section 1326(a).

Court documents reveal that Osorto-Lopez was deported from the United States on two occasions: December 4, 2009, and September 3, 2012. Despite these removals, he was found in the Eastern District of Louisiana on March 14, 2024. At that time, he did not have permission from either the Attorney General or the Secretary of Homeland Security to return.

United States District Judge Barry W. Ashe sentenced Osorto-Lopez to six months in prison followed by one year of supervised release. Additionally, he must pay a $100 mandatory special assessment fee.

U.S. Attorney Evans commended the efforts of United States Customs and Border Protection in their investigation of this case. The prosecution is being handled by Assistant United States Attorney Jon M. Maestri from the General Crimes Unit.
