Roger B. Handberg, U.S. Attorney | U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Florida
Jacksonville, Florida – A Honduran national has been indicted for illegal reentry into the United States. The announcement was made by United States Attorney Roger B. Handberg regarding Alex Rafael Gonzalez-Morales, aged 35, who is charged with illegal reentry by a deported alien. If found guilty, Gonzalez-Morales could face up to 10 years in federal prison. His trial is scheduled for March 3, 2025.
The indictment states that Gonzalez-Morales had previously been convicted of unlawful reentry of a removed alien and was deported from the United States in November 2019. After his removal, he did not receive permission from either the Attorney General or the Secretary of Homeland Security to seek admission back into the country. He was discovered voluntarily present in the U.S. on or about January 14, 2025.
It is important to note that an indictment serves as a formal accusation that a defendant has violated federal criminal law. However, every defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
The case is being investigated by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) based in Miami with assistance from the Jacksonville sub-office. Assistant United States Attorney Rachel Lasry is prosecuting the case.
