Consumer Technology Association (CTA) CEO and Vice Chair Gary Shapiro has been awarded a Knighthood in the Royal Order of Francis I. This recognition is for his leadership in advancing technology and promoting innovations that are transforming society.

The Royal Order of Francis I, established by the Royal House of Bourbon two centuries ago, honors individuals from various fields such as business, science, entertainment, and education for their significant societal contributions.

“I am thrilled to be recognized as a Knight in the Royal Order of Francis I,” said Shapiro. “As the United Nations recognized in 2023, technology is a fundamental aspect of human security. Through our work at CTA and CES, the world’s most powerful tech event, we encourage the innovations that make life better for millions of people.”

Shapiro joins an esteemed group of previous recipients including former UK Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, Anglican Archbishop Desmond Tutu, singer Frankie Valli, and race car driver Mario Andretti.

“Knighthood is about leadership that fuels the engine of a better society… [I’ve interviewed] well over 1000 of the top CEOs and Gary has created something unlike anyone else in the world,” said Robert Reiss, CEO of CEO Forum Group, who nominated Shapiro. “From his books to CES, Gary has put forth the vision to drive innovation which emboldens millions of people to elevate their business.”

The induction ceremony was held at St. Agnes Church in Naples, Florida.

The Consumer Technology Association (CTA) is North America's largest technology trade association. It represents leading innovators from startups to global brands and supports over 18 million American jobs. CTA owns and produces CES – regarded as one of the most influential tech events globally.
