Federal agencies establish temporary processing site for wildfire recovery in Los Angeles

ORGANIZATIONS IN THIS STORY

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has partnered with various state and local agencies to expedite wildfire recovery efforts following the Palisades Fire. In collaboration with the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES), the California Environmental Protection Agency (CalEPA), the California Department of Toxic Substances Control, California State Parks, and both the city and county of Los Angeles, a temporary processing site has been established at Will Rogers State Beach parking lot.

This site will facilitate the safe removal of household hazardous materials from properties affected by the fire. The initiative aims to accelerate debris removal, enabling residents to rebuild their homes more quickly.

The chosen location is deemed suitable due to its proximity to damaged properties and its flat, open terrain. The parking lot at Will Rogers State Beach is a property managed by Los Angeles County under an agreement with State Parks for over 50 years, which includes maintenance responsibilities shared with the City of Los Angeles.

During operations, EPA will employ best management practices to ensure hazardous materials are processed safely within the facility's confines. Air monitoring will be conducted throughout to maintain health safety standards in and around the site.

The temporary site remains closed to the public as these efforts continue. Residents are encouraged to remain patient as federal and state partners work together towards community recovery.
