Burlington, Vermont – The United States Attorney's Office has announced that Antonio Bayarri-Barrera, a 35-year-old Spanish citizen, has pleaded guilty to illegally entering the United States. The charge was based on his entry at a location not designated for immigration by authorities.
Court records indicate that on January 31, 2025, at approximately 2:52 a.m., U.S. Border Patrol agents were alerted to an individual walking south towards the U.S.-Canada border near the Haskell Free Library in Derby Line, Vermont. Shortly thereafter, a Border Patrol Agent intercepted the individual who had crossed into the United States and conducted an immigration inspection. During questioning, Bayarri-Barrera admitted to being a Spanish citizen and confirmed he had crossed the border near the library.
Bayarri-Barrera appeared before United States Magistrate Judge Kevin J. Doyle on February 3, 2025. He entered a guilty plea and received a time-served sentence; he could have faced up to six months in prison.
Acting United States Attorney Michael P. Drescher praised the investigatory work of the United States Border Patrol.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Andrew C. Gilman. Bayarri-Barrera is represented by Assistant Federal Public Defender Emily Kenyon.
