Today marks the first Gulf of America Day, recognized on February 9, 2025. This follows the signing of Executive Order 14172 by President Donald J. Trump on January 20, 2025. The order, titled "Restoring Names That Honor American Greatness," mandates the renaming of the U.S. Continental Shelf area previously known as the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America.

The renamed area is defined as being bounded by Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida to the northeast, north, and northwest, extending to its seaward boundary with Mexico and Cuba. President Trump explained that this action was taken because "[t]he area formerly known as the Gulf of Mexico has long been an integral asset to our once burgeoning Nation and has remained an indelible part of America."

In his proclamation today, President Trump stated that it is fitting for Americans to come together to commemorate this occasion and recognize the historical significance tied to American greatness. He called upon public officials and citizens across the United States to observe Gulf of America Day with suitable programs, ceremonies, and activities.

President Trump's statement concluded with his formal proclamation: "NOW, THEREFORE, I, DONALD J. TRUMP, President of the United States of America... do hereby proclaim February 9, 2025 as Gulf of America Day."

The declaration was signed by President Trump on February 9th in what he described as a year marking two hundred forty-nine years since America's Independence.
