FTC names Christopher Mufarrige director of consumer protection bureau

Federal Trade Commission Chairman Andrew N. Ferguson has appointed Christopher Mufarrige as the new Director of the Bureau of Consumer Protection. Chairman Ferguson expressed confidence in Mufarrige's capabilities, stating, “I am delighted to appoint Chris Mufarrige as the next Director of the Bureau of Consumer Protection. Chris is a stellar attorney and a tireless public servant.” He added that under Mufarrige's leadership, the bureau will continue its efforts to protect American consumers from fraud and safeguard children online.

Mufarrige brings significant experience in consumer protection law to his new role. He previously served as a Senior Adviser to the Director and Deputy Director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau during the first Trump Administration. In this capacity, he advised on enforcement, rulemaking, and supervisory exams related to major banks and nonbank financial institutions. More recently, he was Chief of Staff and Attorney Adviser for Commissioner Melissa Holyoak.

In addition to his government service, Mufarrige has worked at private law firms and served as an in-house lawyer. He also taught a class on financial services and consumer protection at George Mason University’s Antonin Scalia Law School.

Mufarrige holds a degree from Scalia Law School, a master's degree in economics from George Mason University, and a B.S. in economics from Texas Christian University.

The appointment was unanimously approved by a 4-0 vote by the Commission.
