Sex offender sentenced for failing to register while living secretly in Beaumont

Damien Diggs U.S. Attorney | U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Texas

A sex offender in Beaumont, Texas, has been sentenced to federal prison for failing to register in the Eastern District of Texas. The announcement was made by Acting U.S. Attorney Abe McGlothin, Jr.

Lequinte Dangelo Johnson, aged 37, pleaded guilty to the charge and received a 24-month sentence from U.S. District Judge Marcia A. Crone on February 13, 2025.

Court documents revealed that Johnson was convicted in Riverside, California, in 2006 for lewd or lascivious acts with a child under 14 years old. As part of his conviction, he was required to register as a sex offender. In July 2023, the U.S. Marshals Service in Beaumont obtained updated registration paperwork from Arizona indicating that Johnson had registered as homeless with an address listed in Glendale, Arizona. However, he provided a "409" cell phone number as contact information.

Further investigation through social media revealed that Johnson was residing in Beaumont without having registered there and was eventually found living in a storage unit.

This case is part of Project Safe Childhood, an initiative launched by the Department of Justice in May 2006 to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse. The project coordinates resources at federal, state and local levels to apprehend offenders and rescue victims.

The investigation was conducted by the U.S. Marshals Service and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Rachel Grove.
