They committed to enhancing defense capabilities through joint exercises and reinforcing the military strength of Japan's Self-Defense Forces alongside U.S. and South Korean armed forces. "The United States reiterated its ironclad commitments to the defense of Japan and the Republic of Korea," supported by America's military power.
A strong stance was taken against any unilateral changes in the Indo-Pacific region's status quo by force or coercion. The leaders underscored maintaining a free and open Indo-Pacific while adhering to international law. They also highlighted peace across the Taiwan Strait as crucial for global security.
Addressing North Korean threats was another focal point. The officials reaffirmed their dedication to denuclearizing North Korea in line with United Nations Security Council Resolutions (UNSCRs). Concerns were raised about North Korea’s nuclear activities, cyber threats including cryptocurrency thefts, and growing ties with Russia. A united front was declared against provocations from North Korea.
Human rights violations by North Korea were condemned, with a commitment to uphold international sanctions against Pyongyang. Efforts will continue towards resolving issues related to abductees and separated families.
Economic resilience featured prominently in discussions. Plans were made to enhance energy security through collaboration on liquefied natural gas and diversify critical mineral supply chains. Technological advancement was recognized as vital for regional security; hence cooperation on emerging technologies like artificial intelligence and cybersecurity will be intensified.
Commitment to a fair global economic order was reiterated, opposing economic coercion or unfair trade practices while supporting partnerships that benefit citizens of all three nations.
Lastly, preparations for South Korea hosting APEC 2025 were discussed with an emphasis on achieving significant outcomes through collaboration based on shared values such as democracy and rule of law.
