U.S. Attorney Alexander M.M. Uballez resigns following presidential transition

U.S. Attorney Alexander M.M. Uballez announced his resignation at the request of President Donald J. Trump, joining over 20 U.S. Attorneys asked to step down during the presidential transition.

Uballez expressed his farewell, stating, “Today, I say farewell to a Department that I love... Most importantly, we fought to build a community united in the pursuit of justice for all by choosing prevention before punishment.”

Appointed by President Joseph R. Biden on January 26, 2022, and confirmed by the Senate on May 17, 2022, Uballez focused on violent crime through proactive measures like the Project Safe Neighborhoods program and Albuquerque Community Safety’s Violence Intervention Program.

Uballez also worked on expanding resources for Tribal communities and modernizing office operations by transitioning from paper to digital systems.

Raul Bujanda of the FBI commended Uballez's service: "Alex Uballez has served the people of New Mexico with honor and distinction... There is no doubt his work has made a positive impact on our community."

Brendan Iber of ATF added, “U.S. Attorney Uballez’s dedication to upholding the law... The ultimate goal of ATF and all law enforcement throughout the State of New Mexico is to ensure that the great citizens of New Mexico can feel safe and secure in their communities."

Margaret A. Katze from the Federal Public Defender's Office praised Uballez for his honesty and community-focused approach: “His focus on community safety was evident in his deliberate, data-driven prosecutorial decisions."

Bernalillo County District Attorney Sam Bregman noted strong collaboration with Uballez: “He has been a great leader for the people of New Mexico.”

During his tenure, Uballez advised Attorney General Merrick Garland on policy matters affecting U.S. Attorney’s Offices and contributed to subcommittees focusing on various issues including Native American affairs and organized crime.

Following his resignation, First Assistant U.S. Attorney Holland S. Kastrin will serve as Acting U.S. Attorney until a successor is appointed.
