Small business leaders push for permanent tax deduction in Washington D.C

NFIB members recently attended the Small Business Deduction Summit of 2025 in Washington D.C. to advocate for making the 20% Small Business Deduction permanent. The deduction, set to expire at the end of this year, is seen as crucial by small business owners who fear a significant tax increase if it is not extended.

NFIB President Brad Close emphasized the importance of this deduction, stating, “This week, Main Street job creators shared one urgent message with lawmakers: Stop the massive tax hike on small businesses. The 20% Small Business Deduction levels the playing field between small businesses and larger corporations, allowing small business owners to compete, grow their business, hire employees, raise wages, and give back to their communities.”

During the summit held on February 11-12, NFIB members engaged with lawmakers to discuss why Congress must pass the Main Street Tax Certainty Act. This legislation aims to make the deduction permanent and has been reintroduced in both chambers of Congress.

According to NFIB's advocacy efforts, failing to extend this deduction could result in nine out of ten small businesses facing substantial tax increases. The organization urges supporters to assist by contacting Congress with personalized emails sharing how these issues impact their businesses.

NFIB continues its advocacy through various channels including a podcast episode recorded during the event that provides updates and information on this critical issue for small business owners.
