U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Boston has arrested a 27-year-old Guatemalan national, Wilber Chinic-Villagran, who was convicted in Massachusetts for multiple offenses including assault and battery on a family member, intimidation, and violation of the Abuse Prevention Act. The arrest took place on January 26 in Framingham, Massachusetts.
“Wilber Chinic-Villagran illegally came to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and committed some horrendous crimes,” stated Patricia H. Hyde, acting Field Office Director for ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations in Boston. “We simply will not tolerate such a threat to the residents of our Massachusetts communities. ICE Boston will continue to prioritize public safety by arresting and removing egregious alien offenders from New England.”
Chinic's initial encounter with U.S. authorities occurred on July 28, 2020, when he was apprehended by U.S. Border Patrol after entering the United States near Laredo, Texas. He was voluntarily returned to Mexico at that time.
Chinic later re-entered the United States illegally at an unspecified date and location without inspection or authorization from U.S. immigration officials.
On February 7, 2023, ICE filed an immigration detainer and warrant for Chinic's arrest with the Middlesex County House of Corrections (MCHOC) in Billerica, Massachusetts following his arrest by local authorities. However, he was released by Framingham District Court on February 28, 2023, without honoring the detainer.
A subsequent immigration detainer was lodged against Chinic on September 22, 2024, after another local authority apprehension.
The Framingham District Court convicted Chinic on October 23, 2024, for two counts of assault and battery on a family/household member along with other charges. He received an 18-month prison sentence with all but four months suspended.
Another conviction followed on December 24, 2024, for an additional count of assault and battery on a family/household member resulting in another suspended sentence with only 90 days to serve. On this day as well, MCHOC informed ICE that Framingham District Court released him without honoring their immigration detainer.
Chinic is currently held in ICE custody.
