Newport News men receive life sentences for series of violent crimes

Jessica D. Aber, U.S. Attorney | U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia

Three men from Newport News have been sentenced to life imprisonment following their conviction by a federal jury for a series of violent crimes, including five murders and two additional shootings.

Court records and trial evidence reveal that Ronzel Monte Dixie, Kwaimain Shy’de Redmon, and Meko Montez Brown Jr., along with others, engaged in criminal activities from January 16 through November 2017. Their offenses included at least seven shootings, five murders, four commercial robberies, three drug robberies, three car thefts, and two high-speed police chases. The men used various firearms during these incidents.

On October 1, 2017, Dixie and Redmon robbed a drug dealer during a home invasion. They brandished firearms and stole drugs, money, and the victim's Lexus sedan. Later that month on October 12th, they robbed another drug dealer to secure bail money for Redmon.

The violence continued on October 16 when Dixie fatally shot an individual after leaving Hoss’s Deli in Newport News. On the same day at Happy Shopper convenience store in Hampton, Dixie executed a store employee while robbing the establishment.

In November 2017 alone:

- On the 7th: They committed armed robbery against another drug dealer.

- On the 8th: They killed one man and attempted to rob a correctional officer.

- On the 9th: Brown participated in robbing Miller Mart convenience store.

- On the 10th: A stolen Cadillac incident led to more violence.

- On the 11th: Another MetroPCS retailer was targeted.

Dixie received five consecutive life sentences plus an additional thirty years for multiple charges including conspiracy to interfere with commerce by robbery. Redmon was sentenced to life plus fifty-seven years; Brown received life plus fifty-four years.

Erik S. Siebert from the U.S. Attorney's Office for Eastern Virginia announced these sentences alongside Michael Feinberg of FBI’s Norfolk Field Office after U.S. District Judge David J. Novak issued them. The investigation involved both Newport News Police Department and Hampton Police Division with prosecution led by Assistant U.S Attorneys Lisa R McKeel & Mack Coleman as well as Special Assistant Howard J Zlotnick.
