National Farmers Union (NFU) recently hosted the 2025 College Conference on Cooperatives in Minneapolis. The event, which took place from February 13 to February 16, brought together 71 students and educators for a comprehensive exploration of cooperative businesses.
The conference aimed to provide participants with insights into the relevance, structure, benefits, and operations of cooperatives. Emma McCormick, NFU Senior Director of Engagement, emphasized the importance of such initiatives: “Cooperatives have long played a vital role in bolstering rural and urban communities alike – which is why Farmers Union established this program decades ago.” She added that the conference helps immerse future agricultural leaders in cooperative business principles by showcasing available opportunities through this model.
Attendees had the chance to hear from representatives of both established and emerging cooperatives. These included Compeer Financial, Organic Valley / CROPP Cooperative, Northcountry Cooperative Foundation, Equal Exchange, among others. In addition to presentations from various universities' speakers, participants visited local cooperative organizations like Seward Community Co-op and Riverton Community Housing.
McCormick highlighted NFU's commitment to education and civic engagement: “NFU was founded on the core principles of education, civic engagement and cooperation, and we proudly build on that foundation today with in-person learning experiences like CCOC.” She also expressed gratitude for sponsors that made the event possible.
Supporters of this year’s conference included CHS Foundation, Federated Youth Foundation, Blaze Credit Union, Cooperative Development Foundation, and NFU Foundation. The Ralph K. Morris Foundation also contributed by providing travel scholarships for several students and hosting a keynote luncheon featuring remarks from Sylandi Brown.
