Honduran national sentenced for illegal reentry into US

Duane A. Evans, U.S. Attorney | U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Louisiana

A Honduran national, Alex Saul Hernandez-Perez, has pleaded guilty to illegal reentry into the United States and has been sentenced accordingly. The announcement was made by Acting United States Attorney Michael M. Simpson. Hernandez-Perez, aged 33, admitted to violating Title 8, United States Code, Section 1326(a), which pertains to the illegal reentry of a deported alien.

Court documents reveal that Hernandez-Perez was discovered in St. Bernard Parish on or around October 21, 2024. He had previously been deported to Honduras on June 13, 2019.

United States District Court Judge Jay C. Zainey sentenced Hernandez-Perez to time served. Following his release from federal custody, he will be transferred to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement - Enforcement and Removal Operations (ICE) for processing and removal back to Honduras.

In addition to the sentence of time served, Judge Zainey imposed one year of supervised release on Hernandez-Perez and ordered him to pay a mandatory $100 special assessment fee.

Acting U.S. Attorney Simpson commended the efforts of ICE's Enforcement and Removal Operations in investigating the case. Assistant United States Attorney Spiro G. Latsis from the General Crimes Unit is overseeing the prosecution.
