The United States Attorney's Office has initiated a civil complaint to forfeit over 9,000 boys' suits imported from China. These suits were intercepted at the Port of New York/Newark, as announced by Acting U.S. Attorney Vikas Khanna.
According to the civil forfeiture complaint, the Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Customs and Border Protection seized the boys' suits in March 2020. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission tested the buttons on these suits and found them to contain prohibited levels of lead. This incident marks at least the third time that Angels New York US, Inc., the importer, has attempted to bring children's clothing with unsafe lead levels into the country.
Acting U.S. Attorney Khanna acknowledged the efforts of U.S. Customs and Border Protection members at the Port of New York/Newark, led by Port Director Jeffrey Greene, along with members of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Peter A. Laserna from the Bank Integrity, Money Laundering and Recovery Unit is representing the government in this case.
It is important to note that all accusations within the complaint are currently only allegations.
