Jason M. Frierson U.S. Attorney | U.S. Attorney for the District of Nevada
A Reno resident has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for assaulting a federal officer during an arrest attempt. United States District Judge Miranda M. Du handed down the sentence, which includes three years of supervised release, for Matthew John Nason's actions involving a deadly weapon.
The incident occurred on February 16, 2022, when Nason fired a handgun at a Deputy United States Marshal who was attempting to serve an arrest warrant at his residence. The warrant was related to drug and firearms violations from the District of North Dakota. Nason's sentence will run consecutively with another sentence he received in North Dakota.
In November 2024, after a three-day trial, a jury found Nason guilty of assaulting a federal officer with a dangerous weapon.
Acting United States Attorney Sue Fahami for the District of Nevada announced the sentencing along with Special Agent in Charge Spencer L. Evans for the FBI Las Vegas Division and Marshal Gary Schofield for the United States Marshals Service.
The case was investigated by multiple agencies including the FBI, United States Marshals Service, and the Reno Police Department. Assistant United States Attorneys Megan Rachow and Randy St. Clair prosecuted the case.
