Microsoft and Pearson have announced a strategic partnership to address the challenge of skilling in the AI era. This collaboration aims to provide employers, workers, and learners with AI-powered products and services, preparing them for an AI-driven economy. The partnership combines Pearson's expertise in learning and assessment with Microsoft's cloud and AI technologies.
A survey by IDC highlights a lack of skilled workers as a significant challenge for enterprises implementing AI technology. Microsoft's Work Trend Index Annual Report indicates that 66% of leaders are reluctant to hire individuals without AI skills. Additionally, Pearson’s research suggests generative AI can save U.S. workers substantial time on routine tasks.
The collaboration between Microsoft and Pearson will focus on several areas:
1. **Personalized Learning at Scale**: Pearson will leverage Microsoft Azure Cloud Computing and AI infrastructure to expand personalized learning services globally.
2. **Innovative Collaboration**: The companies will introduce new AI credentials and certifications, alongside tools like copilots to aid skill development.
3. **Investing in Technology-Driven Careers**: Microsoft will extend its partnership with Pearson VUE through 2029, expanding access to essential certifications.
4. **Powering the Workforce**: Pearson plans to deploy Microsoft 365 Copilot across its workforce, enhancing productivity through workplace AI tools.
Pearson CEO Omar Abbosh stated, “AI is driving a true revolution in education and work... Partnering with Microsoft means we can reach more learners than ever before." Judson Althoff from Microsoft added, “The speed and scale of today’s AI innovation present an opportunity... We are thrilled to partner with Pearson."
Both companies aim to expand their efforts in providing global access to AI skilling resources. In 2024 alone, Microsoft trained over 23 million people in digital skills while Pearson launched its Generative AI Foundations certification.
