U.S. Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum has signed a Secretary's Order to rename the Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge in Texas to honor Jocelyn Nungaray, following an executive order from President Donald J. Trump. The refuge will now be known as the Jocelyn Nungaray National Wildlife Refuge.

Jocelyn Nungaray, a 12-year-old girl, was tragically murdered by illegal immigrants in North Houston, Texas, in June 2024. This incident has been highlighted as part of President Trump's call for stronger border security and stricter immigration enforcement. The suspects, who are Venezuelan nationals and allegedly members of the Tren de Aragua gang, have been arrested and charged.

Secretary Burgum stated, “Jocelyn Nungaray’s story has left an indelible mark on the hearts of Americans.” He added that her life was taken by individuals who "should have never been in our country" and emphasized President Trump's dedication to remembering her name. The renamed refuge will serve as a lasting tribute to Jocelyn's memory and a reminder to protect children and uphold justice.

President Trump addressed Congress about the renaming during his speech, describing Jocelyn’s murder as “a devastating consequence of weak border policies that must end.”

The 39,000-acre refuge is located along the Texas Gulf Coast and serves as a sanctuary for migratory birds and diverse wildlife. Managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, it is part of the National Wildlife Refuge System with roles in coastal conservation, public recreation, and environmental education. It will now also stand as a tribute to Jocelyn’s memory and symbolize the Trump administration's commitment to community protection.

In coming months, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service plans to update signage and materials to reflect this new designation.
