A Flat Rock man, Steven Marchbanks, 58, has pleaded guilty to charges of illegally transporting and receiving an explosive device. This was announced by Acting United States Attorney Julie Beck, who was joined by James Deir, Special Agent in Charge of the ATF’s Detroit Field Division.
Marchbanks also admitted guilt to being a felon in possession of firearms. The charges stem from an incident involving a home explosion in River Rouge, Michigan, in June 2024. Court documents reveal that Marchbanks purchased what is believed to be an M-80 explosive device from an unknown individual on the street. He then transported it to a residence and left it unattended with two children present. One child set off the device, leading to severe injuries and structural damage.
Law enforcement later executed a search warrant at Marchbanks' home and discovered two firearms belonging to him. Due to previous felony convictions, Marchbanks is legally prohibited from possessing guns.
Acting U.S. Attorney Beck stated, "The facts of this case show the danger that illegal explosive devices pose to our community. Tragically, this defendant’s actions caused devastating injuries to minor children."
Special Agent in Charge James Deir added, "The allegations in this case represent the most horrific unintended consequences associated with poor choices... In the end, Mr. Marchbanks will have several years behind bars to reflect on how his poor decision-making caused serious injuries to a child."
Sentencing for Marchbanks is set for July 15, 2025. He faces up to 10 years in prison for the explosives charge and up to 15 years for illegal firearm possession.
The investigation was conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives with help from the River Rouge Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Nhan Ho is handling prosecution duties.
