The National Association of REALTORS (NAR) has expressed support for a new initiative by the U.S. Departments of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the Interior (DOI). The two departments have established a Joint Task Force on Federal Land for Housing, aimed at identifying underutilized federal lands that could be developed for residential purposes.

Shannon McGahn, NAR Executive Vice President and Chief Advocacy Officer, commented on the initiative: “Lack of inventory remains one of the biggest barriers to affordability, driving up home prices and putting the dream of homeownership out of reach for too many Americans."

McGahn emphasized that HUD and DOI's task force acknowledges housing as crucial to economic stability. She noted that smart policy solutions, such as streamlining regulatory and permitting processes, can help address the supply crisis. "In pursuing this initiative, we appreciate the care taken to prioritize housing development in those areas where it is most viable, with an eye toward environmental stewardship," she added.

The NAR has consistently advocated for reducing regulatory hurdles that delay development and increase costs for new homes. According to McGahn, "The task force is a great step forward in unlocking more opportunities for first-time buyers, workforce housing, and underserved communities." She also mentioned NAR's eagerness to collaborate with policymakers to ensure expanding housing inventory remains a national priority.

The National Association of REALTORS is recognized as America's largest trade association involved in all aspects of residential and commercial real estate. The term REALTOR identifies a real estate professional who is a member of this association and adheres to its Code of Ethics.
