An Iowa City resident, Javeyel Johnta Jones, has been sentenced to 41 months in federal prison for possessing a firearm as a felon. The sentencing took place in Davenport, Iowa.
Court documents reveal that Jones, aged 22, was linked to a shooting incident in Muscatine in May 2023. A firearm recovered from the scene had his fingerprint on it. Further investigations in 2024 found him with another gun in West Liberty.
Jones had previously been convicted of possessing a firearm as a felon by the Iowa District Court for Johnson County in 2023 and was on probation when he was federally indicted.
Post-imprisonment, Jones will undergo three years of supervised release. Federal sentences do not include parole options.
The announcement came from United States Attorney Richard D. Westphal of the Southern District of Iowa. The case was investigated by the Muscatine County Police Department and the Muscatine County Drug Task Force.
This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence through collaboration between law enforcement agencies and communities.
