Sean P. Costello U.S. Attorney | U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Alabama
In September 2024, the Mobile Police Department conducted a traffic stop involving an individual named Jones. During this stop, officers discovered that Jones was in possession of two firearms. One of these firearms was equipped with a machinegun conversion device, also known as a "Glock switch," which can convert a pistol into a fully automatic weapon. Jones admitted to law enforcement that he understood how the Glock switch functioned and had previously used the weapon with the device attached.
Following legal proceedings, Judge Granade sentenced Jones to 51 months in prison. Additionally, upon his release, he will serve a three-year term of supervised release. The firearm and conversion device were forfeited to the United States as part of his sentence.
The case was investigated by both the Mobile Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. Assistant United States Attorney Beth Stepan prosecuted on behalf of the government.
This prosecution is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence by fostering collaboration between law enforcement agencies and communities.
