A Colombian national has been indicted by a federal grand jury in Salt Lake City on charges related to drug, firearm, and immigration offenses. This follows the seizure of approximately 10,000 fentanyl pills and a firearm during a search operation.
David Estiven Alvear Carcamo, aged 20 and residing in Kearns, Utah, was initially charged on March 5, 2025. According to court documents, the investigation began in January 2025 when the Wasatch Metro Drug Task Force started probing a suspected drug trafficking organization believed to be distributing large quantities of narcotics in Utah.
On March 4, 2025, agents executed search warrants at a residence in Sandy, Utah, and on a vehicle owned by Carcamo. He was found as the sole occupant of the vehicle where agents seized approximately 10,000 fentanyl pills weighing 2.35 pounds and a handgun.
Carcamo faces charges for possession of fentanyl with intent to distribute and being an alien in possession of a firearm and ammunition. His initial court appearance is scheduled for March 20, 2025, at the Orrin G. Hatch United States District Courthouse in Salt Lake City.
The announcement was made by Acting United States Attorney Felice John Viti for the District of Utah. The case is under investigation by the Wasatch Metro Drug Task Force (WMDTF), which includes members from the FBI and Davis Metro Narcotic Strike Force (DMNSF). The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Utah will prosecute the case.
This case is part of Operation Take Back America, an initiative aimed at combating illegal immigration and dismantling cartels and transnational criminal organizations. It leverages resources from various Department of Justice programs including Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETFs) and Project Safe Neighborhood (PSN).
It is important to note that an indictment is merely an allegation; all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in court.
