HUD allocates $2.5M for hurricane-affected states

Under the leadership of Secretary Scott Turner, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has allocated nearly $2.5 million in Rapid Unsheltered Survivor Housing (RUSH) funding to assist those affected by recent hurricanes and severe storms in North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas, and the City of Houston.

"Today’s RUSH funding underscores the administration’s commitment to helping individuals and families in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Texas who are homeless or at risk of homelessness and have needs not fully met by existing federal disaster relief programs," said Secretary Scott Turner.

The RUSH program aims to address gaps left by other federal disaster programs that focus on returning Americans to their homes or rebuilding after natural disasters. "While many of our nation’s federal disaster programs help Americans return to their homes or rebuild a home in the wake of natural disasters, HUD’s RUSH program ensures we fill the gap of unmet needs for individuals experiencing homelessness in a disaster area," Turner added.

This funding announcement increases RUSH grant investments to $11.4 million across these jurisdictions. The allocation process involved two steps: an initial allocation addressing immediate unmet needs for homeless assistance and prevention following severe storms like Hurricane Beryl and Tropical Storm/Hurricane Helene; followed by a second allocation based on data regarding damage extent, particularly affecting rental units occupied by very low-income households.

In addition to financial support, HUD continues to provide technical assistance through remote and on-the-ground services aimed at improving aid delivery within impacted areas.
