A Guatemalan man has been sentenced to federal prison for illegally reentering the United States after being deported twice. Humberto Leonidas-Suarez, 61, residing in Dubuque County, Iowa, was sentenced on March 24, 2025, following a guilty plea earlier in the month.
Leonidas-Suarez admitted to returning to the U.S. without permission after previous deportations in 2010 and 2024. Immigration officials discovered his illegal presence on February 6, 2025, when he was found at Dubuque County Jail due to an arrest on state charges for failure to appear.
United States District Court Chief Judge C.J. Williams sentenced Leonidas-Suarez in Cedar Rapids to 39 days of imprisonment. After serving his sentence, he will undergo a one-year term of supervised release. In the federal system, parole is not available.
Currently held by the United States Marshal’s custody, Leonidas-Suarez will be transferred to immigration officials following his prison term.
