Mexican national faces drug and gun charges in Salt Lake County

A federal grand jury in Salt Lake City has indicted a Mexican national living in Salt Lake County, Utah, on charges related to drugs and firearms. Luis Alberto Ramirez-Gonzalez, also known as Leonardo Gomez-Ahumada, 28, residing in Herriman, Utah, faces allegations outlined in a complaint dated March 17, 2025.

Court documents indicate that the investigation began in December 2024 by detectives with the Utah County Major Crimes Task Force, targeting a drug trafficking organization. On March 13, 2025, law enforcement executed a search warrant at a residence in Magna, Utah, where Ramirez-Gonzalez was present. During the search, authorities reportedly found approximately 300 grams of suspected heroin, which tested positive for heroin. Additionally, Ramirez-Gonzalez allegedly possessed a Sig Sauer P320 handgun and ammunition, despite knowing that his illegal status in the United States prohibited firearm possession. He was subsequently taken into custody.

Ramirez-Gonzalez faces charges of possession of heroin with intent to distribute and being an alien in possession of a firearm. His initial court appearance is set for March 28, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. before a U.S. Magistrate Judge at the Orrin G. Hatch United States District Courthouse in Salt Lake City.

The announcement came from Acting United States Attorney Felice John Viti for the District of Utah. The Utah County Major Crimes Task Force is investigating the case. Special Assistant United States Attorney Peter Reichman is prosecuting.

This case is part of Operation Take Back America, an initiative by the Department of Justice aimed at combating illegal immigration, dismantling cartels and transnational criminal organizations, and safeguarding communities from violent crime. It aligns efforts from the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces and Project Safe Neighborhood.

It is important to note that an indictment is only an allegation, and defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
