James Mailhiot, Jr., a resident of Rutland, Vermont, received a sentence in the United States District Court following a guilty plea to federal income tax evasion. Judge Mary Kay Lanthier imposed a four-year probation term on Mailhiot and instructed him to complete 200 hours of community service during this period. Additionally, Mailhiot was ordered to pay restitution of $296,618 along with a fine of $25,000. During the court proceedings, his counsel indicated that Mailhiot was ready to fulfill the restitution payment immediately post-sentencing.
The United States Attorney's Office for the District of Vermont highlighted that Mailhiot faced charges for evading a great deal of income taxes owed to the United States from 2019 to 2022. Mailhiot had admitted to these charges in December after they were filed in November 2024.
Mailhiot, who owned and operated a roofing company, accumulated approximately $1.6 million in gross revenue between 2019 and 2022. He employed an out-of-state accountant to handle his federal income tax returns. For tax preparation, Mailhiot provided the accountant with records of earnings and expenses related to his business activities. However, the records given were significantly incomplete, leading to the understatement of his taxable income and, consequently, a substantial underpayment of his taxes. It was determined that the tax underpayments amounted to $296,000 for the years 2019 to 2022.
The investigation for this case was conducted by the Internal Revenue Service's Criminal Investigation division. Mailhiot's legal representation is managed by Mark Kaplan, Esq., and the prosecution is handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Gregory Waples.
