U.S. Border Patrol agents from the San Diego Sector carried out a rescue mission for two women stranded in the Otay Mountain Wilderness. The rescue operation, involving multiple agencies, was initiated following a Friday midnight distress call received by agents from the Chula Vista Station, as reported by Mexican authorities.
The two women, who had crossed illegally and were of Mexican nationality, were found in a remote canyon, about six miles east of the Otay Mesa Port of Entry. Both were unable to move due to ankle injuries, and one was reportedly pregnant, facing a lack of food and water. Poor weather conditions, including fog and low cloud cover, initially thwarted their extraction, leading Border Patrol agents to construct a temporary shelter to protect the women from the elements.
Improved weather conditions the following morning allowed agents to coordinate with a helicopter from the San Diego Sheriff’s Department to airlift the women to safety. They were then taken to a local fire station for medical checks. After clearance, the women were transferred to a Border Patrol station for processing and subsequent removal from the U.S.
The incident highlights the dangers posed by crossing the border illegally, particularly in harsh weather conditions prevalent in the San Diego region, where temperatures can plummet to freezing levels. "The border region can be treacherous, with extreme weather and rugged terrain posing serious dangers," stated San Diego Sector Acting Chief Patrol Agent Jeffrey D. Stalnaker. He emphasized the risks involved in illegal border crossing and praised the tireless efforts of agents in safeguarding the nation and assisting those in distress.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), the largest law enforcement organization in the U.S., remains vigilant in monitoring corridors away from the nation's borders to prevent smuggling activities. Individuals are encouraged to report suspicious activity to the U.S. Border Patrol by contacting 911 or the San Diego Sector.
CBP continues to play a pivotal role in protecting America’s borders while facilitating lawful travel and trade to ensure economic prosperity and national security.
