Registered sex offender sentenced to 10 years for child pornography

A registered sex offender was sentenced to ten years in federal prison for possession with intent to view child pornography. Acting United States Attorney Sara Miron Bloom announced the sentencing of David Hamlin, 43, of Cranston. Hamlin had previously pled guilty to the charge.

Hamlin's criminal history includes charges in Rhode Island state court in 2016 and 2018 for child pornography violations. In 2018, he pleaded guilty to the transportation of child pornography.

Court records indicate that in March 2024, local FBI agents were informed by their Tampa, FL, counterparts that Hamlin's cellphone was used to access an online platform for transferring child sexual abuse material (CSAM) to an undercover FBI employee.

A court-authorized search warrant in April 2024 led to the seizure of two cell phones from Hamlin. Forensic analysis uncovered multiple images and videos of CSAM on the devices.

U.S. District Court Judge Mary S. McElroy sentenced Hamlin to 120 months of incarceration, followed by 10 years of federal supervised release. The prosecution was led by Assistant U.S. Attorney Julianne Klein.

This case is part of Project Safe Childhood, a national initiative to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse. The initiative involves coordination between U.S. Attorneys’ Offices and the DOJ's Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section, leveraging federal, state, and local resources to tackle child exploitation.
